The Witch Collector

This started off with some promising chapters and a fun premise. I liked the idea of Raina (a woman unable to speak, using sign language to communicate) as the main character and enjoyed the first few scenes- the first battle is a really fun read with some terrifying bits that kept me on the edge of my seat.
But overall it just felt bloated. Everything lasted longer than it needed to- ESPECIALLY the time in the goddamn forest. Raina’s big change of heart over Alexus was sudden and felt unearned- and Alexus just felt underdeveloped overall. The character and backstory was pretty cool- but he just wasn’t fleshed out as much as he could have been. He didn’t feel like a person- just someone interested in Raina.
I ALMOST didn’t finish- again, this just felt so bloated (even though it’s not the longest book)! I skimmed the last 60 or so pages- even the final spicy scene got a little long (and not in a good way!).
Overall, it wasn’t bad. I don’t think I’ll pick up the next book- but had a good enough time with this one. The history, magic, and ideas are all solid- I just wish it was a bit more concise (and that the dialogue was a fraction less cringey).
