Lirael by Garth Nix

Sadly, this was a massive step down from [b:Sabriel|518848|Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1)|Garth Nix|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1293655399l/518848._SY75_.jpg|3312237]. The book is 526 pages, but very little actually happens. The middle drags on especially and the characters don‘t help either. I‘m just not a fan of sad, depressed and self-pitying protagonists, and Sameth practically excels at being all of those. Him being there was pretty damn pointless, since he does nothing but whine, mope and get stabbed. Lirael is little better, and yes, I get why she would feel cast out and misunderstood, but I just didn‘t enjoy reading about any of that.
Things finally pick up around the last 100 pages when Mogget shows up and starts calling Sam out on his bullshit, but that was just a little late for me. I really wish the book was shorter and I missed the feeling of dread and anxiety, of being alone and outmatched, that I got from Sabriel.

I‘m still going to give the book 3 stars for the reveal at the end, but it‘s at the very edge to 2.
