Marigold Mind Laundry by 윤정은, Jungeun Yun
3.5

Overnight, in the village of Marigold on top of a hill, old Jieun has conjured up a magical Mind Laundry, where she cleanses painful experiences from her customer's hearts. We meet five of Jieun's customers to her laundry: a frustrated young filmmaker; a tortured social-media influencer; a distraught mother; a young woman two-timed by her lover, and Yeonghui, a victim of bullying, who works as a delivery man to escape his pain in routine.

As expected, this was a super easy, feel-good read. The beginning of the book with some back story about Jieun’s childhood threw me a bit because it exuded complex sci-fi vibes and I thought I had judged the book genre incorrectly. However, once we settled into the laundry setting, it was clear that there’d be nothing overly complicated here.

Jieun’s customers had unique challenges and they had different ways of overcoming them, showcasing true diversity of human’s minds. By assisting them, Jieun learned a lot more about life and understanding herself, as she was actually an old soul living in a young body. At the same time, it was interesting that I could see Jieun as an innocent, naive soul who didn’t experience life to the fullest prior to the laundry days.

All in all, this was a comfort read that I devoured in a day or so. I had wished to see the continuation of Jieun’s back story, but I understood this wasn’t meant to be that kind of book. I’d highly recommend this to anyone wishing to ‘switch off’ for a moment and enjoy a surge of positivity.
