Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

4.0

I made this my BOTM selection because I’m a sucker for a good mystery. But this is far from a thriller - nobody is in danger, there are no psychopaths or cold-blooded killers; instead, there is a group of people, tortured by secrets, lies, and fear, grappling with the consequences of a few small actions.

The narrative is fast-paced, stirring, downright gut-wrenching at times. Angie Kim paints an incredible portrait of so many important experiences: an immigrant family fighting for the American dream (no matter the cost); a couple struggling with infertility and unmet expectations; and the heartbreaking reality that millions of parents walk through every day with their special needs children - the exhaustion, the frustration, the desperation for some kind of relief.

And as these experiences collide, Kim manages to spin a mystery that is emotionally and intellectually fascinating. Characters scramble to cover their tracks as a bitterly fought trial unfolds, and when the dust has settled, an unanswered question still lingers: who was truly guilty?
