A charming story that was fun to read and envision. Taking place in Utah in the early part of the 20th century, I found the dialogue and development of the main characters (David, MaryAnn, and Lawrence) to be immediately interesting, and I loved how the present-day (1960s) setting in the first and last chapters wrapped around the rest of the story, which took place from 1908-1918. I enjoy the flashback style of stories like this one.
One of my favorite passages in the book is one of the early conversations between MaryAnn (Chandler) and David, as they are still getting to know each other:
"Any other inquiries, Miss Chandler?"
She smiled playfully. "Now that you ask, I have wondered what makes a man collect clocks? And so many of them at that."
David studied her face, then leaned forward as if to reveal some great secret.
"It is because I need more time."
Great book about life, love, friendship, heartbreak, and forgiveness that is worthy of re-reading.
