Some things were done well with this novel, and some things were done poorly.
The over explaining of the symbolism (of the bugs) is so annoying and unnecessary. The over explaining of how characters (mostly the main character) are feeling at every single moment is insufferable. I see this writing style pop up again and again and I don’t know why I suffer through books like this.
Actually I do, the themes of religious trauma in this book hooked me. As an ex Catholic, this was… one of the best portrayals of how the concept of sin is taught to young Catholics. Also, the character of Zandy is so annoying when she describes her Catholicism. Either way, interesting book.
Catholicism (is a cult). There’s no such thing as a good Catholic. You can’t distance yourself from the Pope, you can’t outrun him, Zandy.
If the writing style was less lecturing and less about teaching the reader exactly what they should be thinking about the author’s messages, symbols, themes, etc, it would be tolerable. Do these authors realize how militant and lecture drenched their writing feels? I have a feeling they don’t.
Sorry Lindsay.
