This book sits comfortably in-between sci-fi, dark academia, extended metaphors, and psychological thriller. The unreliable narrator allows the author to make the story intentionally vague. It’s hard to know what’s real and what’s not. If taken literally, this story is a gore-y expression of art going too far, if taken has a metaphor, it’s a journey of an outcast battling loneliness and cliques in an isolated community. I think the author intends for it to be both.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Gore, and Violence
Moderate: Bullying and Blood
Minor: Drug abuse, Drug use, Mental illness, Self harm, Sexual content, Death of parent, Gaslighting, Toxic friendship, Alcohol, and Injury/Injury detail
Due to the extended metaphor, it’s unclear if all of these things ACTUALLY happen, but they are mentioned/perceived by narrator
