I was prepared to do my usual review style when I started The Briar Club, but by the end, I changed my mind: I went into this book pretty much blind, and I think it’s better that way! Here’s why I’m keeping my review vague:
This is one of the most unique story structures I’ve ever read. It was compelling, extremely engaging, and kept me on my toes.
Additionally, there’s an element of mystery to the story, and I spent the entire book trying to figure things out. (Part of my predictions were correct, but other parts were not.)
Lastly, there’s an element to the story that adds a lot of character, but it’s something I wouldn’t have expected in a historical fiction book.
If you enjoy historical fiction, especially when there’s a little extra something, then I do think you’ll enjoy this book!
I’ve read most of Kate Quinn’s other historical fiction novels: The Alice Network, The Huntress, The Rose Code, and The Diamond Eye. I didn’t enjoy The Rose Code as much as the others, but Kate Quinn is an excellent writer. The amount of research she puts into her books has to be absurd, but that is to be expected from a quality historical fiction author. Beyond the research and historical accuracy (outside of artistic liberties for the sake of the fiction), Kate’s stories always draw me in. They’re so compelling, and she always includes complex but lovely female friendships and allyships. I have yet to feel disappointed when reading a Kate Quinn story!
