I thought the premise was clever, and I enjoyed the creative introduction. However, what started out cute quickly wore thin. Every new section (which is to say every few pages) repeats a variation of "can you believe it took people so long to figure this stuff out!?" Like most mediocre jokes repeated relentlessly, this moved from lame to irritating to infuriating well before the end of the book.
I think the basic problem is that the book is too long to sustain such a high level of pretense. Jokey asides about the time travel premise can't be inserted on every other page if there are going to be over 400 pages. A book of that length implies a desire to communicate a serious volume of information that is incompatible with a style which can't go a whole paragraph without cracking a joke.
