Well done historical fiction. I really appreciated the endnotes explaining why the author decided to present WW1 through the perspective of five people instead of just one... personally I don't like that method of storytelling, but it did make sense in this case. The storyline and the endnotes gave a pretty good overview for WW1, making this book an excellent supplement to studying this time period.
