The Realms of the Gods
by Tamora Pierce
Ahhh this one, the divisive final book to tie off Daine's story! I say divisive because of the student-mentor romance that Pierce throws into the mix here. I remember questioning it a bit back in my youth, so I guess the pairing felt off even back then. Truthfully the dynamic she had with Kaddar in Book 3 was far more interesting (and appropriate, haha). Were the 90s such a different time? I wonder if Pierce regrets writing in the age-gap romance here. Probably a prickly topic regardless.
As for the actual story, I found it to be the most plodding of the quartet. The dragon stuff was fun (dragon obsessive over here, howdy), but we're taken out of it way too soon. And once they had two ancient dragons on their side, I stopped worrying about the main characters surviving. Daine's animal powers alone could win an entire battle, but that wouldn't make for an entertaining story, eh?
I remember loving the ensuing Kel books tremendously, so I'm very intrigued to see how those hold-up. They went way more in focus on the knighthood process and read a bit more adult. We'll see how my memory holds up there...
