My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

challenging dark emotional fast-paced

4.5

Couldn’t put down. Read in one day.

At points I felt like the abuse was being romanticized, but I guess that it part of what can go on in your mind when you’re being groomed. Like Vanessa was flipping from desire to disgust with what was going on. That’s one of the fucked up things about groomers if that they make you feel this way through their charming manipulation. It all felt very real, like a true vision into the life of someone being groomed and abused. I didn’t love the “sex”/rape scenes, but then again I guess that just gives the reader the full picture of Vanessa’s experience.
By the end, I felt proud of Vanessa, relieved that she gets to live a life without Strane, started talking about it with her mom, and adopted a dog (“he’ll never meet you”).
