Did Bek buy slaves? Yes. Did he really mean to? No (truly he thought he was rescuing them/he doesn't know what slavery means/he feels really, really bad when he learns what it does mean). So we're just gonna let it slide. And anyways, this is arguably one of the best installments in this series since the first initial 5 books or so.
