Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky
by Kwame Mbalia
Gum Baby, dammit! Honestly, I would recommend this book if Gum Baby were the only character doing a book length soliloquy. The recording of this book is excellent. The narrator, Amir Abdullah, knocks it out of the park!
Tristan comes from a family of boxers. He tries to embrace boxing, but he fears he may not have what it takes and his anger gets the better of him in many a situation. I like that the book drives home the message that everyone's story deserves to be told, written and heard. Tristan learns how to be a better manager of his own behavior, and that is an important reason to share this book with young people. The substantial list of folklore that comes together to tell this tale is impressive!
