Wow. I’ve been wanting to read this for so long and I figured Pride month during the horrible onslaught of anti-queer laws in the US rn was the perfect time to read it. I fell in love with Jess, with their friends and their lovers. I laughed with them, I cried with them. This book is so important. Even though it is fiction it is so illuminating to the FIGHT our queer ancestors have been through.
Stone Butch Blues reminds me of a few other books I’ve read and loved, especially Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble, Jewelle Gomez’s The Gilda Stories, and Rita Mae Brown’s Rubyfruit Jungle. Though these stories are all unique and glorious in their own ways, the connections in these lesbian characters’ lives are there.

And the afterword. Just 🥰

Rest in peace, Leslie Feinberg.
