Speak by Louisa Hall
3.0

3.5 stars rounded down because I’m left wanting more. Speak is a novel about human connections and attachments. It follow five unique characters throughout time who are all in some way connected to the worlds first Artificial Intelligence. That AI in the future has been given all of these characters voices by being told their stories. The writing in this was great and all of the characters were unique and fleshed out, but none of their stories really hooked me in or impacted me in any meaningful way. I feel very “Meh” about them all, which is disappointing. The central theme of what makes humans human (spoiler alert, it’s empathy and connection to other humans) was obvious from the beginning and so the ending fell really flat for me.
