after reading i feel a lil calm and content, like i just had the most cathartic vacation

this is probably a 4 or 3.5 star read, but i'm giving it 5 stars purely because it surprised me in a very good way. although it is the last book in a series, it doesn't have some huge conflict that takes up most of the book and then small romantic progressions that don't mean anything. this book was more about tracing how all the characters have changed and how they have to deal with it rather than rowell pulling a major major plot point out of her ass (ig she kinda did but it doesn't feel like it to me lol) i was very happy with how simon and baz's issues weren't simply tossed away, they worked through it and grew closer because of it and AUGH it was so well done. their relationship is my favorite. i'm very happy with all the other pairings as well, just AUGH I LOVE.

now this book is a honker (500 pages!!!) that is mostly about personal growth imo and yet it never dragged for me. i would read and suddenly i would be a hundred pages further than i was when i started and time had seemed to stop. the writing is very simple (fan fic writing lol) but also packs an emotional punch when needed.

only complaint i have is how the main conflict was wrapped up very abruptly and basically thrown out when it had just been resolved; no lasting consequences were shown or anything like that. the book's ending itself seemed very abrupt, like we were missing another 20 pages or something. wish that was tied up a tad nicer, especially since we received new vampire related info that was PRETTY BIG and then just never mentioned again? that and the plot of the second book was just irrelevant the whole time? like it should have just been a duology with this as the second and final book because the events of wayward son hold no hold over the plot whatsoever.

just overall this book gets 5 stars from me because it fulfills my favorite fan fic style of story where it's all about how character's react when the main story is done, and how they mend relationships and learn to be content with themselves. plus there were more gays and i'm a simple bitch whose mentally ill so-

*ALSO GENERAL PSA, rainbow rowell is vv problematic, so keep in mind when reading and consider borrowing her books from your library or buying second hand
