The Hummingbird's Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea
3.0
The novel starts off well enough, but then throws in numerous characters and choppy situations and language. Some conflicts seemed unresolved, and really I didn't see the purpose in the title. While the protagonist was the hummingbird's daughter, other characters proved much more influential (and important) when it came to the story. It's almost as if the title was chosen because of its poetic nature, and not because it was a central theme in the book.
A good start to a book, but it quickly loses momentum. It took me a while to finish this one.
A general knowledge of Spanish will help with some of the expressions as there are no translations.
*EDIT: Just found out that this novel was in fact translated from Spanish. My plan is to read the Spanish version some time in 2012 and hope for better results (enjoyment)
