The Lucky List by Rachael Lippincott
3.5

Added the .5 stars because I thought the romance was adorable (if a bit frustrating), and Emily’s grief hit me in the gut. (I think that several of these book’s messages would seem corny if my dad didn’t pass away 2, almost 3, years ago— I’ve had about the same time to grieve him as Emily has grieved her mom.) I found myself on the brink of tears several times. For the most part, I thought the setting of Huckabee was a good balance of stifling and charmingly nostalgic. I was a bit surprised at how little of the list actually involved leaving Huckabee, though, since that was supposed to be a big deal?

Aside from those aspects, as well as the resonant portrayal of comphet, this was a pretty standard summer coming-of-age book, and its formulaic nature lessened some of the impact. It’s very fluffy, sometimes to a degree I found boring, parental grief aside. I had similar issues with “She Gets The Girl”, so the bulk of my issues probably boil to my own personal writing style preferences— I don’t think Lippencott’s books are for me. The prose and the plots feel very standard.

(Also OOO I know I absolutely would’ve slapped some characters in the cast if I were Emily!!! Yes I would take advantage the fact that she’d be too young to get charges pressed against her) (yes, one of those characters would be the dad IDC how badly I’d get my shit rocked… those who know the scene towards the end I am referencing will understand…)

And on the topic of “She Gets The Girl”, to quote a review for its Christmas-themed sequel, and to summarize my thoughts on this book: “Perdonen lesbianas, no lo amé.”
