How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor

5.0

Amazingly inspirational read about organizing and finding your own community. I don’t know if the last interview is supposed to be so juxtapositional to the other three, but it really cements the emphasis the interviews have toward grassroots organizing with a small collective of unified purpose versus big tent national coalitions. Hindsight is 20/20 and from reading this I can definitely see where BLM ended up going wrong. I think I’ve come out of this book with an understanding organizations are not scalable. Trying to form an organization around a movement is always going to be too disorganized, or rather they shouldn’t be the focus. Focus should be put into small groups with shared ideologies that come together with shared purpose to tackle issues, and join movements.
