This was truly a gut punch in a book. I’ve read Jennifer Hartmann before so luckily I knew what I was in for, but if you haven’t and you can be easily affected, check trigger warnings.
Both Ella and Max deserved so much better. Ella was constantly in protective and survival mode, and Max was just trying to keep everything afloat. Despite really feeling for Max and the book being dual PoV, I did really struggle to connect to him- it’s like there was a wall there. Maybe it was because when we got his pov he was solely focused on Ella, or his dad or something else, which makes sense for the plot, but there was still room there to develop him further.
This book did satisfy my frequent need for all things deep and emotional.
The action in the third act conflict (aka Jonah) was incredibly rushed and diminished my opinion and rating of the book.
All in all, Jennifer Hartmann is an exceptional writer and I will be picking up more of her stuff.
