Rifqa by Mohammed El-Kurd

challenging emotional reflective

5.0

Rifqa was such a brilliant poetry collection and I think everyone should read it. This collection tells the story of  Rifqa’s (the author’s grandmother) life and how it was entwined with Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Each poem was witty and illuminating, representing the heartbreaking reality of Palestinians past and present. However the Mohammed El-Kurd highlights that Palestinians are more than the tragedy they face, that they are full of love and resilience for their people and their land. Each poem was absolutely beautiful, and I loved how El-Kurd played with diction, syntax and the physical space on the page. Rifqa continues to be a relevant story today and I recommend it to everyone.
