I was never one for a romance novel, but growing up with Days of our Lives and Y&R after school, hearing about the telenovela angle is what first drew me into this story. I had an even better feeling about this book when reading the dedication to Rita Moreno, it was a sign!

“If you’re not wearing lipstick and earrings, you might as well be naked.”

This story already gave something different when it focused on two leading POCs in a Latinx production, and layering side characters who were non-binary and trans. It those inclusions that fit to the book (and hopefully we’ll be seeing more progress). Also big themes of female empowerment through our story, not only for leading lady Jasmine but her costars, family and even crew. It was nice to read about it in this setting! Glimpses into the episodes they were filming were also a plus!

Maybe the only thing I didn’t pick up on was the New York City vibe. Often I forgot where we were until a character mentioned going back to their apartment. Of course with it being a romance novel, you get a dumb reason for the characters refusing to do the devils tango but fate intervenes and release the ILYs (<spoilers> Jasmine of course he wouldn’t tell you about his secret son, you’re in the tabloids every week!?</spoilers>)

Stay for:
  • A Meet-cute that is realistic and makes the book title make sense!
  • Cousins who are supportive!
  • Telenovela cliches (they’re more fun than you think)

Maybe don’t stay if:
  • You have a thing against drama
  • You were looking for more than just LGBTQ+ rep in supporting characters
