With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

5.0

Such an amazing book!

Was hopeful that I would adore this book as much as I adored Poet X, but I was also worried that switching from poetry to traditional storytelling could have been lost in translation. I shouldn't have worried because this book was everything!

Topics range from heritage (Black and Puerto Rican), growing up in poverty, being raised by someone other than your parents, discovering the best journey after high school, being a teen mom, finding love after it doesn't work out with your baby daddy, being a lesbian teen (Emoni's friend), and so much more.

The conversations were rich and lyrical and expressive. I applaud everything within its pages and beyond.

Only downside, which is a staple of all YA books is the infamous "let out a breath I didn't known I was holding" line occurred 3 times. AND that isn't really a big deal, just comical to me because everyone hates this line.

I felt myself feeling happy, sad, angry, and snapping my fingers when Emoni bursts a sassy retort to other character's stupid comments. It was AMAZING! I know I'll read more and more from Elizabeth Acevedo in the future.
