The Employees
by Olga Ravn
I'm not sure what it is about books like this, but I devour them. Anything that takes place in the distant future, potentially on another planet or in space. Cyborgs. Humanoids. Humanoids with emotions? YES. Perhaps it's because I'm an Aquarius? I won't say I've read a lot of books with humanoids, but the integration of humans and humanoids in this short book was fascinating to read about. There was some tension. There was some uncertainty. At times, I was unsure or forgot who I was reading about in each statement, which seemed deliberate. I also liked how it was organized in short, witness-statement-style chapters. It reminded me a bit of Blade Runner and a little bit of Everything You Ever Wanted by Luiza Sauma.
The Employees explores what it means to be human, memory, and AI/synthetic life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a mix of literary fiction and science fiction. With a total length of 136 pages, it's also ideal for a quick read.
