The Lazarus Solution by Kjell Ola Dahl

5.0

A wartime thriller that packs both heart and punch. The grandmaster of Nordic Noir is back!

The Lazarus Solution is an absolutely riveting tale of wartime Norway and its battle against Nazi occupation and the secondary threat of communism. Centred around a displaced system of Norwegians in Sweden, Kjell Ola Dahl tells a tale of deceit, underhanded attacks on ways of life, and at its heart, human differences in ideology and what is right and wrong.

This is, shamefully, my first book of Kjell Ola Dahl and honestly i’m telling myself I have been missing out. This story in particular is told with such class and depth of knowledge which is simply stunning. The descriptive ability to transport you through time to an era of pure devastation and utter terror is not something I was expecting. I totally forgot about modern technology and way of life whilst reading and honestly thought i was living in war torn Europe, watching the news!

There is such a gloomy and gritty feel to the novel and that is in no way a negative. It is true to the theme and creates an extra layer to the read. The characters are diverse and interesting which keeps the story fresh. The story itself feels very much like a whodunit and Kjell Ola Dahl kept me guessing throughout. The ‘twist’ was brilliant and I certainly did not see it coming!

The Lazarus Solution is an atmospheric tale of human history rooted in a nordic noir environment with an ensemble of deep characters and a classic twist that cements Kjell Ola Dahl as a modern master.
