Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
by Frank Miller
Revolutionary. Miller shook up what Batman is supposed to be, and what Batman could be.
Some of this feels like a way to boost Miller's own ego, (constant, CONSTANT references to how freaking old Batman is... how his joints hurt, how he's struggling, etc.)... but mostly it's a repaving of old territory. There's a classic story of good and evil but with lots of really interesting political commentary and hints that Batman's morals aren't always rock solid. Miller pokes you into questioning the motives of EVERYONE involved, although the lines of good and evil are still clearly drawn.
I enjoyed the depiction of Superman as a goody two shoes, and seeing Batman in juxtaposition with him. I think the author is trying to point out that heroes, though powerful, are still human, and are not always "right" or "wrong."
If you want to enjoy this, read it carefully. I got a lot out of it because I really paid attention, especially to the huge action shots of Batman, and the tv panels.
A great precursor to Watchmen, which REALLY flips the idea of superhero on its head.
