Intimacies
by Katie Kitamura
Intimacies by Katie Kitamura begins with a female protagonist narrating the complex relationship she has in her profession as an Interpreter at the International Court in New York – a primarily male-dominated, political setting. Kitamura uses this novel to illustrate the difficulties of working with powerful (and arrogant) men and the precarious and fragile relationships , and tongue-biting a female must endure in the workplace to keep a job. Meanwhile, our narrator sparks up a relationship with Adriaan, a married man who has recently separated from his wife – another complicated scenario, to say the least. The tiring shift of languages, acts of translation and interpretation, multiple identities, and power dynamics happens to be particularly overwhelming in our narrator’s search for love, truth, and contentment as she tries to find her definition of home.
I’m not sure if this was a hit or miss for me – I’m somewhere in the middle. I enjoyed the prose and interesting female perspective, but I wasn’t over the moon with the storyline like I had hoped to be. Still an intriguing read, but didn’t quite hit the mark for me!
