This is a book of anecdotes written in the Cape Coloured dialect. The introduction outright says this isn’t a political critique and that we should view the stories from a child’s perspective, which sets the lighter tone from the outset. The stories highlight many aspects of Coloured culture, including close-knit communities, and touches on elements of apartheid South Africa.
After a while, however, it feels as if you’re at a family function where your youngest uncle is trying to convince you that, in his youth, he was the best at every game and all the girls liked him.
