Angelou writes authoritatively about her youth in the 1940's, detailing the realities of the "black experience" in rural Arkansas and California. While a foundational text, I think it's essential to remember that she is one voice—albeit a monumental one—among many describing what life was like during the mid-20th century (as it pertains to one's racial or ethnic perspective).
