This book has been on my shelf for months (years?) and for some reason I just never reached for it even though on paper it's a format I really like. I think I avoided it because I was worried it would be depressing.
While the stories didn't exactly have happy endings,  I didn't find it depressing - and not just because of the hopeful tone of the ending.
I don't think all three stories were expanded upon equally, and none were developed enough for me to form a deep emotional attachment. This was kind of a good thing though, as it meant I wasn't as bothered by decisions characters made which I really couldn't relate to (although none were to the degree of being "idiot plot"). I ended up enjoying the read and like that I ended up learning a bit about the history of bee hives. Could maybe be 3.5 if I ever start using half stars.
