On Palestine by Ilan Pappé, Noam Chomsky

informative sad medium-paced

4.5

Chomsky was one of my first “teachers” in my undergrad. I didn’t get to learn from him directly, but his work was foundational for me in terms of how I developed my worldview at such a critical time in my intellectual development. As such, his work is often square in my comfort zone and if there’s an option to learn from him on a topic, I take it.

This was a very informative read. There was some information I knew and some I didn’t have a full understanding of, and I think this is an excellent and accessible primer on relations between Israel and Palestine, on the Zionist colonial project, and on the cycle of escalating violence that is so powerfully framed by highly successful Israeli propaganda as terrorism and reasonable defence. For people who want to be informed outside of the charged media narrative, whether they just really don’t understand how it can be possible that this is a genocide or they can FEEL that what they’re being fed is wrong but don’t know why, this conversation is a great primer.

There’s some repetition throughout, which could be annoying to some and helpful for grasping the ideas to others. All of that said, I’d highly recommend ALSO hearing from Palestinian voices on this topic, but found this to be a helpful starting or reinforcing text.
