Originally read this book 15 years ago, and I remember really loving Melinda as a character, but this time around the teenage angst and despising almost every person she has an interaction with was a bit much, bordering on grating and toxic at times. (Not to say that some of the vitriol was undeserved, as she gets treated really poorly by her friends and her classmates. I’m talking about the internal monologue of mocking someone’s appearance if they’re overweight and wearing tight clothing or flat out assuming all the cheerleaders are having sex and getting regular abortions, that kind of stuff was a bit much for a 13 year old)
That being said it’s still a really great novel and it held up and was a really enjoyable read. Subject matter is obv incredibly important, very well handled, writing is great and appropriate for the genre and age group.
