my feelings on this book are…complicated. did i devour it within a few days? yes. the actual writing itself/rina’s prose wasn’t really the issue and i enjoyed the side plots that occurred throughout the book. it was more of the characters and my lack of attachment to them.

one of my biggest gripes was the overload/dumping of side characters. i understand there is a whole “rina verse” ( i read all of jeremy’s parents origin story) but this book is specifically listed as it can be read as a stand-alone. it did not feel that way. there are SO many side characters that have their own lore/backstory that it felt like i was missing so much by not reading the other 20+ she has that come before this series. i don’t want to have to follow a massive reading order just to read 1 book that says it can be a standalone novel.

killian being a “psychopath” was the main focus of the entire book and while i get that it is what drives his character, it was so repetitive and exhausting to have it brought up every other paragraph. it was like we were being forced into remembering he is a bad guy, BUT for a reason. “he can’t help it!” sure, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t give me the ick with his behavior. i don’t need to be reminded that he has no control over his behavior multiple times in one chapter.

SA’ing the FMC in the first chapter of the book was definitely…a choice. the dubious consent throughout the book is obvious, but that first encounter….phew. i found it hard to like killian at all for the rest of the book after that.

i liked the FMC to an extent. there were some things about her that downright confused me (like wanting to commit because her family is better at their craft than her??) but most of my issues with her are MY issues. she was a fairly well written character. im glad she played into killian’s issues rather than being the clueless, ditzy type. however, i did get annoyed that she claimed he “broke her heart” by telling devlin to KHS when it should have been obvious he wouldn’t care lol. like miss girl, you know what he is like, why are you throwing a fit now that he is exhibiting the behavior you claim to be able to handle?

all in all, this was written in just a way that got my attention and im tempted to continue with the books.
