pulpmonkey66 's review for:
A Princess of Mars
by Edgar Rice Burroughs
I have read this book many times and picked it up again about a month ago. I loved this series as a kid and still admire Burroughs for how well he writes and his amazing imagination.
As is often the case, memory is fonder than reality. The story is a bit dated in some of the values, which I can fully accept and appreciate, but my main issue is the dreaded "misunderstandings" that are throughout the book. John Carter says something and Dejah Thoris rather than ask for clarification instead gets butthurt until much later when it is put in proper context.
After the first time of not understanding the strange Earthman, you'd think she's start saying, "Whoa, there. You know you just implied "X" and I want to make sure we are on the same page." Nope. Misunderstandings and butthurtness prevail.
All that said, still a fun and enjoyable read.
