This book really had me enthralled at the beginning. I loved the whole Mr Bowditch plot line but then I got so bored once Charlie went to Empis. There was just no stakes I was feeling and it didn’t even feel like whimsical like a fairy tale or anything. I feel like I don’t even know who Charlie is as a character— he’s kinda just a blank slate hero. Also in the beginning he said that he never saw Pauley without the white baseball cap which made it seem like he would have multiple run ins with Pauley but he didn’t. Maybe it would’ve been better if I read it psychically instead of listening but honestly I think I might’ve DNFed it. I know Stephen King churns out so many books and this one felt like just another one churned out. It definitely needed to be edited more and looked after more in order to be good but I feel like the publishers and him probably thought okay it’s good enough and just decided to release it. I feel like maybe it’s hard for Stephen King to write something “happy” and not horror focused. Even the parts that were supposed to be disturbing didn’t disturb me. The descriptions weren’t giving me images I could grasp onto. I saw some people in booktok saying this was five stars which is so interesting.
