Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil
by V.E. Schwab
brat summer is over besties, it’s time for toxic lesbian vampire autumn!
seriously though, i’m absolutely adoring the comeback of gothic horror. this book was everything a contemporary gothic novel should have — lush prose, existential themes of immortality and the corruption of one’s soul, evil and rot and decay hiding under an irresistible and sexy exterior, vampirism as a metaphor for sex and desire… i could go on forever.
my one qualm — i really couldn’t care less about Alice and I truly think her storyline could have been cut. i really just found her POV to be really repetitive and i personally don’t think it really added that much to the story 🤷🏻♀️ but besides that, it was a phenomenal read, v.e. schwab does not disappoint!
4/5 stars
