Four Eids and a Funeral
by Adiba Jaigirdar, Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
I enjoyed this book but it had a number of flaws. It's obvious that the characters have romantic feelings for each other but it's never discussed or acknowledged until the last quarter of the book. They say 'I love you' out of the blue and then magically they are an item. The conflict that lead to their falling out was built up to be something intense and it was only because they thought the other didn't write them back?! If my so-called best friend didn't respond to my letters, I would call them and ask what's the problem. Also these are teenagers with cell phones. There is no way they would write physical letters. They would text, dm on social media, or email first.
The split custody of the cat was a little contrived. Also prior to their falling out, they had been friends for almost a decade. But Said didn't realize until just now that Tiwa faced racism in their own Muslim community? Sure, Jan. If this is a first time author, it is a cute start. If not a first time author...yikes.
