I adored Sacrificed when I read it earlier this year. I could hardly wait until Forsworn came out. Now, after reading Forsworn I really want the next book as well. This was such a good book!
Forsworn starts a year after Sacrificed ended. Clio and Derik are defending Sheehan from hordes of Untouched who have been at the gates for a year. Clio is no longer the scared girl pushing her visions away. Instead she is a hardened warrior using her visions to guide her city’s army.
Clio rescued three girls from slavery and they are now her Vessels. To the court Clio is King Derik’s mistress and her Vessels are servants skilled in spying. This is the explanation for keeping Clio close to Derik and a cover story for where the information from her visions come.
After a battle one day all of the Untouched leave Sheehan. A night later an army from Morek arrives. Derik and Clio assume it is an attacking army. However it is Riece returning with his army from conquering other lands for the Emperor of Morek.
Clio still isn’t over Riece and Riece has brought back a foreign princess as his betrothed, Princess Zarae. Things get very complicated with relationships, the return of the Untouched, and the flee from Sheehan.
I enjoyed this book so much. We had almost a completely different Clio. She is almost a completely different character. She is more sure of herself and takes more of an interest in what is happening politically. She is someone important and she knows it. Even if people don’t know the real reason she is important, they know she is. Clio isn’t afraid to be involved and to tell everyone what is right.
Derik is still the young king. He obviously still has feelings for Clio even knowing she cares nothing for him besides brotherly affection. He is in such a hard position. He needs to make decisions for all of Sheehan, putting the welfare of the city before himself. Those kinds of decisions are hard for everyone.
Riece is back! I love Riece. He has such principle and really is always trying to do the right thing. He is intensely loyal to his emperor and a good friend to Derik. Sadly, he isn’t sure what to make of Clio. After the way she treated him at the end of Sacrificed, I’m not surprised.
That brings us to Princess Zarae, Riece’s foreign princess. I didn’t like her a whole lot at first but she did grow on me. She provides an interesting dynamic between Riece and Clio. She really can be rather surprising at times.
I was a little sad we didn’t get to see more of Riece’s sister, Tirza. She had to have fone through a lot in the year the Riece was away. She become so much more independent which is great for her but worries overprotective Riece. I hope we see more of her in the next book.
In all, I loved this book. It was such a good read and I did not want to put it down. I cannot wait for the next book in this amazing series.
