carolinetew 's review for:
Confrontaties
by Simone Atangana Bekono
3.5/5
Read English translation for work (which is not officially out, thus my review being connected to the original Dutch version) and liked but didn't love it. It's very short, which in many ways is to this writing style's benefit, but it felt a bit like a dream. I did find some of the images to get overly repetitive and I'm not sure it had the most nuanced discussion of race I've ever read, but it was a decent story with great writing. I think what this does best is capture the rage that can be felt by those who experience racism; and how that rage is often what is punished, rather than the racist acts that the rage was a reaction to.
