Forgiving Lies
by Molly McAdams
3.5 + TW for rape (on page)
I was enjoying this, the first 75% atleast. Then all the drama kicked in, and I found both the hero and heroine kinda annoying.
But, I have complaints about the first 75% too, I'll start with that. First of all, I wrote in my notes that it was bordering on the insta love, it wasn't bordering because it definitely WAS insta love. Good thing it was done right. Secondly, For someone who was about to be a senior and an undercover cop, they sure doesn't act their age (e.g. the over done scenes in romcoms with the main characters playing with flour and batter and making a mess. This was published ages ago so I can let that go. Still cringe-worthy).
My biggest pet peeve was the hero calling the heroine woman, when asking her to sit or to tell him something or when he's asking her to make him pancakes. I get that he's saying it affectionately, I'm just glad we're over that time period. Also there's this:
I was kinda eeked out by this, this was the hero speaking about a woman, it's 2021 and this just don't sit right with moi.
Now, the dreadful 25%, everything was happening, the second act break-up and even third. The heroine started becoming stupid, but forgivable atleast, I think.
And then, something happens to her, not only that but the hero comes to ger rescue as a cop. After this big revelation she just doesn't know anything anymore.
God, I know Mase and Kash lied but Rachel could've atleast acknowledge that they saved her. Idk, she was so ungrateful after "the incident" I can't even. I mean, bitch can't even utter a simple, "I know you lied and I fucking hate you for that, but you saved my life and for that you deserve a simple THANK YOU". Also, the fact that she was just being overdramatic — enter miscommunication (not even) because she wouldn't let him explain.
Four months later, they reconcile and then the hero says this:
Um, excuse me. If she didn't know how to hold a grudge you would've reconciled as soon as everything went down. Not four months later.
Idk, it just seems counter active to me— some of the things that happened I mean. So this also touches on Candice's hero worship for her cousin. Also, the heroine saying Oh my word as her main expression, what are you 75!!! I have no idea if this is a Texas thing but all I can think about when she says this is Mary— Sheldon's mom from The Big Bang Theory uttering these same words with her southern twang.
This gets 3.5, I did enjoy it there was just a lot happening in 2013 in this book that I don't necessarily like IRL 2021.

I wondered just what kind of warrants that piece of trash had.

She wasn’t one to hold grudges, and I loved her for it.
