The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay

5.0

Madhuri Vijay seamlessly weaved two timelines together to tell a story about a girl grappling with grief in the wake of her mother's death. As she seeks connection to her mother's past, she ends up in northern India where political unrest is high. Vijay's gorgeous prose (there is honestly no other word for how The Far Field is written) teaches about class and the privilege of looking away.

I was amazed to learn this was a debut. The characters were full of imperfections but I wanted to know more about each one. It always amazes me when I can connect to a character whose cultural heritage is so different from mine.
