The Farm by Joanne Ramos

4.0

A novel unlike anything I’ve read with themes of race, motherhood and surrogacy.

Following a host of women who become Hosts where they live in a idyllic estate for free with many benefits including a big pay cheque at the end of their stay. The catch is that they have to carry a child for wealthy couples and are monitored 24/7.

This book gave me big Black Mirror vibes where signing a contract, your entire freedom is taken away and monitored. Ultimately class and race are central to the novel as most Hosts sign these contracts because they want to support their families and have a better life. Golden Oaks (the company that does this) feeds on that.

It all comes down to a mother wanting the best for her child. In womb and out of it.
