"It's funny how bad things sneak up on you when you least expect it."

This was a book I went into expecting one thing and got something else completely. This was a thriller book club pick, and though it had murder and mystery, I would not describe this novel as a thriller.

Pippa and Gabe bought a home on the edge of a cliff in a beach town to start a new life. The family of four soon realize their new life includes multiple people choosing their backyard to attempt suicide. Gabe has been able to use his charm to talk people out of these attempts, that is, until Amanda shows up one evening.

The book switches points of view between Pippa and Amanda and jumps time frames: now, then, and before. I enjoyed the way the book was laid out. It provided a good pace to take in information and be able to process it efficiently.

The two women reflect on their lives and mostly marriages. The contemplation of different relationships and what we are willing to overlook within those relationships was surprising to find whilst reading 'The Soulmate'.  I felt a connection to these characters.

By the end, I wanted to find a classification for what I was reading. I had read one reviewer call it a domestic suspense and another a women's psychological fiction. In some ways, it felt like a coming of age. No matter where this story falls, it was worth reading. The ending had me thinking anything else that felt off earlier was righted.
