thanys_thoughts 's review for:
Onyx Storm
by Rebecca Yarros
This series continues to be about Violet and Xaden.
Listen, I know this review will be unpopular but hear me out.
I really had to think about this review because I have complex feelings about this installment in the series. I fully know that this is not the best written series. I am here for the ride and the vibes. And I have a good time. But if the vibes are not vibing, then I'm not enjoying it as much. Full stop. And the vibes were a bit all over the place.
I enjoyed Fourth Wing and I really enjoyed Iron Flame, despite how the ending infuriated me. But this book wasn't as well paced, probably because there are two more books coming. Therefore it set a lot of things up, but it doesn't resolve any of them. So I'm left feeling a bit meh about it.
Like for example, we got a bit more worldbuilding in the visit to theIsles which felt like a great chance to explore more cultures and people. Which I feel like something was missing from that trip. It all felt very surface level, and didn't go deep enough into it maybe? I'm not sure but the vibes were off.
Did we get shadow and lightening sexy steam scenes? Yes. And I deeply appreciate it. Lots of dragon riding and traveling. But the slower pace and nothing resolved made this one feel a bit more of a slog then the previous two books.
And that ending barely made any sense and made me roll my eyes hard. I'm kind of over Yarros' over the top cliffhangers. And it's ridiculous we now have to wait 2 YEARS for any answers. Which we probably won't barely get any like we did in this book.
