Reading this book to a 4 year old was my first experience with Captain Underpants. I was surprised with how well it amused both me and the child. One thing that frustrates me with books written for children (and cartoons, nowadays for that matter) is that they are written as if the children have no capability of understanding a story unless every word is 6 letters or shorter. Captain Underpants uses vocabulary way beyond the age the book is intended for, but in a way that a young child can use context clues to figure out what is going on. On top of not offending its readers, I was also impressed by the simple, but clever, flip-o-rama pages. The kid I was reading to loved to make sound effects while I flipped the pages. With plenty of adult jokes and puns sprinkled in, Captain Underpants is fun for both the adult reader and child.
