Between the Devil and Ian Eversea by Julie Anne Long

1.0

First third of the book, I felt I might need to vomit into a bush like Miss Charing. Might DNF this book. Two in a row?! So disappointed in the series right now.
Tansy, the FMC, is vapid and sly but we are meant to think she is a wallflower of an ingenue (and not only because she self-describes as such in every other sentence!). She is SO dazzling that our favourite former MMCs in Pennyroyal Green forget about their wives to drool over her (I absolutely HATE it when former FMCs are relegated backstage to be forgotten but their partners are still present). At times she seems genuine (in the kitchen and talking with the duke about loss) but mostly seems shallowly conniving.
However, in chapter 11, we find that she is NOT a paragon of innocent virtue (being a closet smoker and drinker)…and I am starting to get interested in her. Interested to see if this late (wish it had come sooner) glimpse into who Tansy might REALLY be will improve my opinion of her.
Oh, I might also vomit over Ian’s on-the-vicarage-roof-mystical-carnal-mystical-pull connection to Tansy.
OH!! AND the casual racism in the dismissive mentions of “Indians” is disgusting, even if it may be historically accurate. Waiting for the mentions of topless South American women…it’s been a novel or two since it was repeated.
