Pigs: An Extreme Horror Novella by Wade H. Garrett

2.0

Ugh, I am so let down. I was awestruck by The Gravedigger by the same author and so I was hoping for another banger of a story. Unfortunately, this wasn’t for me. I hate to sound pretentious, but I prefer stories with more, ah, substance. Yeah I have occasionally enjoyed the good ol’ gore fest, but for the most part, I need something besides an endless torture party to enjoy a book. I know, I know, it’s the essence of extreme horror, but I crave finesse. The Gravedigger had the same amount or exceeds the amount of torture in this book, and I loved it, because there was a story and substance there.

I think this book started off on the wrong foot for me purely because of the intro. There was no justification for the cops to do this, let alone to a woman in labor. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are some monstrous cops out there that have committed some awful crimes, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around the beginning. A woman is in labor, and they decide this is the guy they want to fuck over? Why? What vendetta did they have against Jake? I don’t get it. Maybe I’m naive, maybe there are cops in this world that would assault a woman in labor who is having a medical emergency even after the dispatcher had informed them (I think that’s really what got me— the dispatcher supposedly notified them), and frame her husband just for shits and giggles, but, wouldn’t it have been easier to choose uh, I don’t know, anyone else? Someone who wasn’t in labor? That the dispatcher wasn’t informed of? That wasn’t having a medical emergency? It just seems so, ugh, I don’t know, tedious. I think it would’ve been better if the cops had some sort of vendetta against him, besides him having a bumper sticker they didn’t like. I mean, come on. I need a better reason than that.

I’m not a psychopath or a cop and I have zero authority and don’t get off on asserting my dominance over others, so maybe that’s the disconnect. I just don’t see a reason for any of this to happen, therefore, rendering the whole story redundant. Now onto the torture scenes, they were “good” I guess, creative, yeah, but I dunno. They were repetitive. I don’t enjoy stories that are flat torture with nothing backing it up, I just don’t. I need something, anything, a grain of substance, not just filler. Even if it’s 99% torture and 1% good story, I would rather have that than whatever ambiguous thing is going on here.

I don’t know, I just didn’t like it. It would’ve been better if I felt more attached to the characters, but I can only feel so much care for someone that I knew for like five pages. Make me feel something, besides being grossed out.

I’ll still try out his other stuff, because I think The Gravedigger is a hidden gem, but this one wasn’t for me.
