#bookstersistersreviews - The Last Magician
I picked up this book after seeing it highly recommended by Papiya from @booksnbeyond and by Adrianne from @the_biblioqueen . And I am happy I decided to trust their judgement because this was such a thrilling rollercoaster ride, full of magic and time travel.
Etsa is a mageus who must travel back in time to steal the ultimate book of magic before the Last Magician destroys it in the hope of freeing the mageus population from the threat of the Brink.
This book reminded me in so many ways of Six of Crows because of the heist element, the gathering of a crew, the planning, the double-crossing and the diverse character representation.
The beginning was a bit confusing because of the complex magic system and its many rules. I still had questions at the end of the book regarding the brink and the way the magic works, but overall it was very well explained for such an intricate system. @lisamaxwell13 did a wonderful job in also managing to correlate it with actual places and history seamlessly. The time travelling aspect was really complex but was explained beautifully, so that by the end of it I was amazed and flabbergasted and in awe of the immense power of imagination the author showed in this book.
One thing I did have a problem with was the character development. There were a lot of characters and POVs but they were not deeply explored to explain their motivations and background.A lot of characters were mentioned in passing without delving into details which again left me wanting more, because they did in some way influence the main characters and put them in their current trajectory.
But other than that, I immensely enjoyed the rest of the book and would definitely recommend it to other fans of six of crows and fantasy.
