Pride and Prejudice
by Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Benent respectively. Hmmm...where shall I start with this Classic?
The writing was excellent! I could drown in it and never surface again. Also my vocabulary just happen to widen so broadly after reading this book. I've highlighted a lot of quotes also which is awesome considering that I rarely highlight anything on a book specially on kindle. :)
The plot. What can I say about the plot? Well, the story as a whole is said to be comedic BUT I never found any humor in it. At all. I don't know if I'm missing something here or if I'm just very young or something. I'm 15, maybe in the future I'll understand the hidden humor in this story, eventually. Plus, I'm not really that big of a fan with romance stories. I rarely come across stories of romance that really grabs me. But fortunately, Pride and Prejudice are one of those few that did grab me. I was totally fangirling everytime Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have a moment. I just want them for each other, okay?
Hmm...Let's move on to the characters. Now, the characters I never really loved fully (except for Mr. Darcy and Jane). I just don't like how most of them are so materialistic especially when they suddenly "fancy" someone all of a sudden just because that person is amiable or agreeable. It's like, in that society, you have to walk on eggshells just so everyone would like you. But, hey, it was in the 19th century, so who am I to judge?
Another thing is, why do they have to marry so soon? And why be so picky with the one you marry? I mean, just because that person is rich, earning ten thousand pounds a year, and so handsomely agreeable, your instantly in love with him? Like what the hell?! What ever happened to falling in love first, get to know that significant other and then propose if you're sure that he/she is the one you want to spend your whole life with? I just don't get it.
And Elizabeth, oh that Elizabeth. I don't like how prejudice she is, but I guess that's the whole point of the story, huh? To not let your prejudice cloud your judgement and give people the benefit of the doubt, but I digress. I do like Elizabeth somewhat. How she's so close with Jane and her father and how she's not ignorant of the state of unequal education of people, how she's so bold and doesn't crack under the peer pressure of getting a husband that she knows that she won't be happy with. I really like those things about her, and there's probably more that I like, but I can't list them all!
Mr. Darcy, ah, Mr. Darcy. My favorite person in the story (along with Jane). Ah~ he's so...okay, I'll stop. But, for those who read this book and know what Mr. Darcy had done, I know we can sympathize with each other on how misunderstood Mr. Darcy is. I know, I know. *wipes tears*
There's a lot more of characters I want to talk about like Lady Catherine, Mrs. Bennet, Lydia, Mr. Benent, and Mr. Wickham. But maybe some other time.
Anyway, yeah, four stars. The book brought out the emotions within me, I was very entertained and I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to be entertained and wan't to read amazing proses. It's going to be worth your time as it is a Jane Austin novel.
